Band
Band
The purpose of the Bennett’s Mill Middle School Band is to impart the appreciation of music to all of its members through successful study and performance. Students are given the opportunity to acquire the skills needed for progression into a high school band program and beyond. It is the goal of the band program to develop lifelong advocates of music.
Band has a unique place in the school curriculum. While it is academic in the sense of having a definite curriculum and expected competencies, there are many aspects of band membership that require participation outside of the normal school day. Such activities are considered to be an extension of the classroom. Since band is like a team sport, the success of the band program is contingent upon each band member performing their responsibilities to the group both in the classroom and beyond.
The band program has the ability to make a positive statement in our community. Through our many performances, it is my hope for our band to promote the many wonderful things that are happening at Bennett’s Mill Middle School, in the Fayette County school system, and in the field of music education in Georgia.
There are many benefits that students can realize by being a member of the band program. The intense concentration and training required to perform in band is the same kind of training that produces success in any field. Band develops coordination, organization, teamwork, and mental discipline. Bands invariably have a high percentage of the school’s top-ranking academic students. Scholarship and musicianship go hand in hand.
Through the cooperation of every student, parent, and teacher, we will have many enjoyable experiences affording musical growth, accomplishment, appreciation and recreation. Students will develop a sense of pride and respect necessary for the continued success of the Bennett’s Mill Middle School Band Program.

General Music
In this course, students explore the creation, performance, and appreciation of music, connecting it to various areas of learning and personal interests. They utilize digital tools and resources to create, perform, and engage with music as both an art form and an industry.
Students play a variety of percussion instruments, including the piano, while developing public speaking skills by presenting their favorite artists and songs. They also study the anatomy of the voice, fostering a supportive environment for those looking to come out of their shell. This compact, 9-week class is filled with music and fun!
Music Technology
Students will learn how to use digital tools and resources to create, perform, respond, and connect to music as an art form and/or industry.
Chorus
This performance-based class focuses on learning to use the vocal instrument to create a healthy and pleasing sound. In addition to learning proper vocal production and technique, students learn music reading skills, sight-singing skills, and performance skills. Students sing literature with and without accompaniment in up to three parts. Chorus offers opportunities for students to develop team building and leadership skills. Participation in concert performances outside of regular class hours is required.

Orchestra = Attitude, Character, and Persistence
The purpose of the Bennett’s Mill Middle School Orchestra is to impart the appreciation of music to all of its members through successful study and performance. Students are given the opportunity to acquire the skills needed for progression into a high school orchestra program. It is the goal of the orchestra program to develop lifelong advocates of music.
Orchestra has a unique place in the school curriculum. While it is an academic class in the sense of having a definite curriculum and expected competencies, there are many aspects of orchestra membership that require participation outside of the normal school day. Such activities are considered to be an extension of the classroom. The success of the orchestra program depends on each orchestra member performing their responsibilities to the group. Orchestra is a “team sport.”
Attitude, character, and persistence are the most important factors in determining how successful a young musician will be. Every orchestra member has an obligation to the other orchestra members, the school, and most importantly to themselves to strive to be the very best that they can be. The high expectations of the orchestra program enable the student to achieve more than they think is possible. Students are expected to always act like ladies or gentlemen. We all have to live with the reputation that we make for ourselves. All students should strive to make a positive reputation for the orchestra concerning their musical quality, attitude, and conduct both in and out of the orchestra class.
